Abstract:

Letters written to or about Pierson Barton Reading, mainly by members of the family, including letters from Richard Bland Lee and Fannie (Washington) Reading (one describing her voyage to San Francisco in 1856 from New York via Panama); letter, 1844, by Reading, relating his overland journey to California and his early impressions; 1851 treaty between U.S. Indian agent O.M. Wozencraft and California Indians at Reading ranch; President Fillmore's certificate of Reading's appointment, 1852, as Indian agent in California, and Reading's accounts while agent; deed for property in Shasta County, 1862.
Also included: correspondence and articles of his daughter, Alice M. Reading; papers relating to the estate of Robert Lee Reading, 1919-1920; correspondence with related notes and clippings, 1943-1970, of Eleanor Lee Templeman, concerning Reading and the Reading adobe.
